Summer is here, and so are some of our favorite festivals and events around Atlanta. Coupled with heaps of new restaurant openings, this summer is turning out to be a big one for the Atlanta food & festival scene.

Kicking us off with some June restaurant openings around the city, Eater.com highlighted EAV’s very own Butaco, the sister restaurant of Brazillian coffee & cocktail bar Buteco that is also in the food hall. The taco and Mexican street food stall is also open late nights on the weekends, according to their website.

Moving over to Kirkwood & the Pratt Pullman District, AlcoHall (pun intended) opened up and features 7 different alcohol brands that serve up cocktails, flights, and tastes. These will rotate seasonally, so head over there during the summer months to sample their current bevs!

How Pullman Yards transformed from producing passenger rail cars to an arts and entertainment district

You have likely heard of and maybe even been to Pullman Yards but, do you know the rich history behind the industrial site? The former farmland just four miles east of downtown Atlanta was purchased in 1904 by the Pratt Engineering Company. They produced sulfuric acid and gasses for soda drinks and worked on the patent for liquid carbonated gasses which was purchased by a then start-up, The Coca-Cola Company. Ever heard of it?  ;)

During World War I, the site switched to producing military equipment and weapons. Later in 1926, the Pullman Company, a manufacturer of luxury railroad cars, purchased the property and used it as a repair and maintenance facility for their trains. The facility included 13 buildings spread across 27 acres of land. Due to the rise of the trucking industry, the site was abandoned in the 1970s until the State of Georgia purchased it to launch a dinner-train experience running from downtown Atlanta to Stone Mountain in 1990. It survived a few years until it, too, was shut down in 1993.

Pullman Yards sat vacant for more than 20 years, aside from the occasional movie or TV production. Baby Driver, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and HBO’s Brooklyn are just some of the many box-office movies filmed at Pullman Yards. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, and several other A-listers have filmed on-site too.

Atomic Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based company, purchased the property in 2018 and has been busy developing the 27-acre "creative city within a city" ever since. Recently, Pullman Yards hosted the Van Gogh Immersive Experience and Stranger Things Experience which drew in thousands of visitors. During the winter, the property features an ice skating rink, which transforms into a roller rink in the warmer months. There's now plenty of fun for the whole family to enjoy lawn games, bocce ball, pickleball, and full-service restaurants Dailies and Sides and Fishmonger. The Coca-Cola wings at the Dailies and Sides are amazing!

The latest development at Pullman Yards is the upcoming opening of Alcohall, a drinking hall with seven stalls featuring different alcohol brands offering tastes, cocktails, and flights. Thirsty guests can also expect billiards, live music, and even mechanical bulls. We can't wait to visit!

Spotlight on the East Atlanta Parent’s Network

They say it takes a village to raise children and what better place to do that than in East Atlanta Village? We caught up with Carleen Sutton, Co-Lead of the East Atlanta Parent's Network (EAPN) to learn more about the group that strives to build a supportive, welcoming, and fun community among the families in East Atlanta.

EAPN is an initiative of the East Atlanta Community Association designed to help local parents meet, share experiences, and discuss issues important to them and their children. It began many years ago with a group of parents who wanted to connect with other parents. "They wanted playdates and a way to socialize. After those children grew up, the parents had an established group of friends, and their needs changed. Unfortunately, that meant there was a long stretch where the Parent Network didn't exist within the community", Carleen told us.

Last year, a local mom Emily Ragsdale and her family were moving into the community and she was actively seeking out a group of parents so she worked diligently to revitalize the group. A few parents formed the committee and began planning family community events from "Spring Fling" to their smaller events, such as "Midway Monday" and "Storytime with Bookish". Since then Emily has moved away and now, Carleen Sutton and Rachel Williams are co-leading a committee of 13 members include Kyle Richardson, Caitlin Mullins, Lauren Bertman, Dan O'Donnell, Ryan McEnaney, Lexi Martin, Shirish Sundaresan, Ashlyn Alford, Lauren Guss, Austin Walker and Lakeria "Keke" Hampton and are still actively working to bring parents together.

Anyone can join EAPN by attending the events. While joining the East Atlanta Community Association is always encouraged, it's not necessary to join EAPN. By attending EAPN-sponsored events, parents will meet other parents in the community. "It takes a village to raise kids and we have found ours by all of the support and parents who come out to each event", said Carleen. "By making donations through the EACA website for EAPN, you give us the opportunity to bring out musicians, free drinks, free kids activities, and pay the costs associated with all of our large events!"

Upcoming EAPN Events can be found on their Facebook page and Instagram! Special thanks to Carleen for the interview!

Until next time, thanks for reading!
